Bassist Eddie Gomez burst onto the international jazz scene in the late 1960s as a featured member of the ground-breaking Bill Evans trio. Since that time, he has been one of the jazz world's most in demand bassists.

He brings with him his trio featuring Stefan Karlsson, piano and Ed Soph, drums to perform at UT's James Cox Auditorium. The trio will perform alone for the first half of the concert. They will be joined by the horn section of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra for the second half of the show.

Tickets available at the door. Free parking is avaiable directly across the street from the venue.

Donald Brown is widely considered to be one of the most important pianists / composers in jazz today. His compositions have been performed and recorded by a Who's Who of modern jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Kenny Garrett, Ron Carter, John Scofield, Donald Byrd, Kevin Eubanks and many others. Bassist John Clayton and alto saxophonist Jeff Clayton are Basie band alumni who co-lead one of the most highly acclaimed big bands in the world today: the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Tribute to Woody Shaw starring trumpeter Thomas Heflin

Trumpeter Woody Shaw is considered by many to be the last great innovator on the trumpet in jazz. He crafted a very distinct and personal musical vocabulary that has been copied by virtually every serious jazz trumpeter since him. Longtime fans of the KJO remember Thomas Heflin as a founding member of the band. He now resides in New York City, working as a freelance trumpet artist and coordinator of education outreach at the Manhattan School of Music. His concert will be followed by a master class at the University of Tennessee on Woody Shaw's improvisational style.

Trumpeter Marcus Printup has been a mainstay in the trumpet section of Wynton Marsalis´ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra since 1993. His fiery style and engaging personality have delighted audiences around the globe. Tribute to Grant Green starring Larry Vincent

Grant Green is one of the most underrated guitarists in jazz history. His unique sound graced many Blue Note recordings during the 1960s and was once described by critic Dave Hunter as "lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy." Guitarist Larry Vincent is a native of Venezuela who came to Knoxville in the late 1980s to study at the UT School of Music. He has been a mainstay on the Knoxville music scene ever since. Vincent's tribute to Green will include many of the guitarists most influential works.

Conrad Herwig is widely regarded as one of the world´s best jazz trombonists. His resume reads like a Who´s Who of modern jazz and includes performances and recordings with the likes of Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Clark Terry, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente and Buddy Rich. He is a featured soloist with the Mingus big band and often serves as the group´s musical director. This special program will feature some of Mingus´ most enduring compositions, as well as music arranged specifically for Herwig over his 30 year career.

Afro Latin Jazz Night with Arturo O'Farrill

Pianist Arturo O´Farrill is a leader in Afro Latin jazz, an exciting genre that originated in the 1940s when artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Kenton began combining the Afro Cuban rhythm section concept with jazz harmonies. This music includes salsa, merengue, songo, son, mambo, bolero, charanga, and cha cha cha and features the entire big band with additional percussion instruments. Mr. O´Farrill brings with him the arrangements of his Afro Latin Jazz Alliance big band, as well as his entire rhythm section: Ruben Rodriguez, bass; Vince Cherico: drums, timbales; Tony Rosa: congas; and Jimmy Delgado: bongos, timbales.
