Birth of the Cool Wednesday, September 1 Noon to 1pm Purchase Tickets Birth of the Cool was the first of several recorded collaborations between trumpeter Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans. As the title suggests, the music broke new ground in jazz and inspired an entire generation of musicians to approach their art in a new way. The arrangements drew on influences from Classical music, and were scored for a nine piece ensemble that included tuba and French horn. Vance

Music of Donald Brown Donald Brown is widely considered to be one of the most important pianists / composers in jazz today. His compositions have been performed and recorded by a Who's Who of modern jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Kenny Garrett, Ron Carter, John Scofield, Donald Byrd, Kevin Eubanks and many others. Donald has lived in Knoxville for over 20 years and performs frequently around town, but rarely performs his own compositions locally. Don't miss this rare opportunity!
Tribute to Woody Shaw Trumpeter Woody Shaw is considered by many to be the last great innovator on the trumpet in jazz. He crafted a very distinct and personal musical vocabulary that has been copied by virtually every serious jazz trumpeter since him. Longtime fans of the KJO remember Thomas Heflin as a founding member of the band. He now resides in New York City, working as a freelance trumpet artist and coordinator of education outreach at the Manhattan School of Music. His concert will be followed by a master class at the University of Tennessee on Woody Shaw's improvisational style.
Tribute to Grant Green Grant Green is one of the most underrated guitarists in jazz history. His unique sound graced many Blue Note recordings during the 1960s and was once described by critic Dave Hunter as "lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy." Guitarist Larry Vincent is a native of Venezuela who came to Knoxville in the late 1980s to study at the UT School of Music. He has been a mainstay on the Knoxville music scene ever since. Vincent's tribute to Green will include many of the guitarists most influential works. |
